The retractable shower curtain rod that you see in Creating the Not So Big House was something Jim Garramone designed and built to solve a particular problem in his house (A Jewel In the Suburbs). At this time, as far as we know, it is not available commercially, although most of the individual components are. It might be possible to incorporate the concept into other structural designs. If so, a contractor could build and install it. Jim is willing to provide the design details and sources for the individual components. His contact information is:
Jim Garramone Garramone Design 9 Williamsburg Court Evanston, IL 60203 Voice: 847.329.7585 Fax: 847.329.7586
If anyone out there knows of commercially available retractable rods, we'd love to know about them. Thanks.
Carol; I've been looking everywhere for the same retractable shower rod you mentioned. When I saw it in Creating the Not So Big House I knew it was perfect for the bathroom we're building at the beach. Did you get the specs and try to build it yourself? Did it work?
Thanks, Sandi

I have also been looking for this rod - can someone manufacture it? - there is a demand!!
For those interested in the retractable rod, drawings showing how it works and if it would work in your house were published in Fine Homebuilding's Annual Kitchens & Baths issue. Winter 2001, No. 143, pages 18-19 in the Great Ideas section. Back issues can be purchased from Tauton Press by calling (800)888-8286. Take care!
I know this post was 4 years ago from now, so this is probably going to be a long shot hoping for a reaply now...but
Actually it might sound silly to you but I've been needing a creative way in making a 'Retactable Rod' for my 'weapon' at an Anime Convention.
I searched on some of those articles provided below but they're too old or don't hold any.
When I was searching through forums I came across the idea to use a "Retractable Curtain Rod". So then I began typing into the searchs of local stores but found nothing.
If by chance anyone reads this I'd love it if someone could provide me with the layout of the design or any local places I might find one.
This is my only option for my project and it would kill me if I couldn't find one.
So if anyone knows of where I can , by chance, find one, I'd love to hear from you! Thanks.
