Again, I was wondering what type of questions and techniques that I should consider when thinking about the Not So Big House Concept and In-laws suites. I have need of two in-laws suites for two set of parents with varying needs. I would like to have a mainhouse for my family such that we are not living on top of one another.
I was just wondering is it possible to have all this and not have this mast house (also a tremendous budget for construction)?
HI, we are about to go through the same building experience as you. As our 'granny' is a diabetic with many of the associated afflictions we have taken time to ensure that there are many safety feature built in such as a hobless shower, handrails, sitting area in the bathroom for drying/dressing with convenient access extra towels, personal hygiene products, clothing. Doorways are wide enough for wheel chair / walker access, and door tracks are recessed. The area contains a bedroom, bathroom, small hall, combined living/dining/kitchen. Dishwasher is a Fisher &Paykel dish drawer. The front door is visible from and shares access to the pathway and portico. Access from the living area is available to the family's outdoor living pavilion and BBQ area, and to meet local authority specifications (Brisbane, Australia), a portion of the living room wall slides away to allow for internal access. We hope it works as well when it is built, as we think it does on paper. Will keep you posted as construction proceeds.
Did you build your home with in-law suite? We are hoping to find a home that will sustain my family of 5 and my mother in the Orlando area without sacrificing a well-built home. I have been checking out Susan Susanka's books from libraries in both Colorado and now Orlando. I would love to find a home plan that allows for privacy for everyone without the unnecessary formal dining and formal living.
I would love to hear where your searches took you.
