I've read all of Sarah Susanka's books, hired an architect and designed a NSB house that I love and that I want to build in Wilmington, NC. The first builder I met with made it very clear he's only interested in building 5000 sq ft homes. I've checked Sarah's site regarding Home Professionals but have not found any listed for Wilmington, NC. Does anyone have any ideas?
Don't give up Francie, enlist your architect to help you find a builder (it is normally a part of an architect's basic service) and try asking the local Building Official (person in charge of the Bldg. Dept. where you are building).
My wife and I have bought a lot just outside of Wilmington and are also interested in having the Vermont showcase house built. Were you successful in finding a qualified contractor for your smaller than 5000 sf house? If so, can you share the contractor's name and phone number? Cordially, Ira in the Poconos
Ira, did you purchase the plans? Have you seen the work of some Wilmington builders that would qualify them to build the 2004V house? I am completing a copy of it for clients right now. We toured the prototype in Stowe? I cannot believe you need to be asking here for builders.
Gonna use all the stone? Maple and cherry inside? Floor plan OK with you and your SO, or are you wanting to change it?
A 2004V copy will be built starting early spring out in Asheville.
If I were you, I would phone the sales manager at the lumberyard local to your site. It needs to be a yard that deals with professional builders. Ask the sales manager for the names of the good builders, the ones that build custom homes designed by architects.
You don't need a wizard to build this house for you. The guy in Stowe that built the prototype you see in the pictures, had never built it before, and look what he did.
It isn't rocket science. It does, however, require attention to detail.
One thing, though, about the house. There are quite a few tons of chimney finish and cap up atop that roof, supported only by four tube columns. In my humble opinion, you would be CRAZY to build this in hurricane country.

Thanks for your reply. I haven't had a chance to visit the site in some time. I've been following your progress on your blog and am very impressed with photos of the progress.
No - I won't be building a true masonry chimney in hurricane country - probably a steel flue fireplace with cultured stone facing - cheaper, lighter weight, almost as beautiful and perhaps a whole lot safer.
There are some questions I'd like to ask you - since you have all the experience of building this house. Perhaps, if you don't mind, you could e-mail your tel # or e-mail adress at: homev@ptd.net. I promise not to take up too much time and a wonderful dinner could be in the offing.
I look forward to hearing from you.
