After 5 years of planning, we have started building the Southern Comfort House. We have changed the plan slightly to include a full walk-out basement. If anyone has questions we will try to answer them.

We live in Missouri and are currently getting bids on the cost to build the Southern Style house plan with a partial basement. I would be interesed to hear your experiences in building this plan.

Are you building yourself or did you hire a general contractor? If you hired a general contractor/builder, how did you approach them about using plans already created outside of his/her shop? We've talked to two contractor who are very chilly about the idea of doing that.

Mindy, I am not sure if you are responding to Building the Prairie House or not, but this is Susan. My Dad is a local builder and he is building the house for us. In his experience, he doesn't have any "in-house" plans. He has customers who come to him with plans ready. However, this Prairie House is more complex and has caused us to study them hard. Which makes me understand whysome builders are hesitant. I would look for a cutome home builder who builds outside of developments, etc. Seems builder's who stick in developments of cookie cutter neighborhoods tend to only want to build that style house. I am not sure what the "southern confort house" is but I am sure with more investigation, you'll find the right builder. And finding a builder excited about the plan will be worth searching for.

Hi, the Southern Comfort house is in the Creating the Not So Big House book. There are pictures of it and the plans are for sale on this page
http://www.notsobighouse.com/plans/waycoolplans.asp
(scroll down about halfway down the page).

My wife and I have just started thinking about building a NSB home and really liked Southern Comfort. We've never built a home before, and don't even have a general idea of $ per foot construction costs. I know there are regional differences (we're in North Georgia, near Chattanooga TN) but would be interested in learning what you have found.

I am so excited to read that the Southern Comfort house has an Adobe version! Are there any other Adobe house designs? Thanks KEW

I am looking for exterior photos of family tradition. The photos in the book are hard to see would also like to see it in different colors if possible.

I just went to a wonderful presentation by Susan last night in Washington, DC, and was encouraged to come to this web site.

We stumbled upon the description of the Southern Comfort house in Susan's book about 1/2 way through the building process, even though I had her first book--and was already a great admirer. So we were thrilled to see it published, and our finish carpenter said it helped him envision the columns, in particular.

Our version--which includes a number of changes (but no basement)--was finished about a year ago last fall. You can view it our web site:

I'd be happy to answer questions about it!

Hi. I just found this post b/c we are thinking of building Southern Comfort by Eric Moser. Any chance I could get a link to view the house? The link is not working right now. I'd also love to hear how you like living in the house. Thanks! Mandy R.
