We've just bought property in Toledo, WA, an hour from Portland, and would like to build one of these houses, but we are confused about the cost to build; in the same vicinity a 2700 sq foot house is being built for $300,000; I'm thinking that it is a basic plan house with some modifications; one of ours but not the other house's is that we have to build a 30 inch foundation per survey. Could someone help us figure out an approximate final cost? We especially love 2005. Thanks. Jane M

Jane,

The expense per square foot on these plans is much more because of the higher level of detail. I would recommend that you buy a set of the plans and have a local builder do an estimate for you based on those plans. You can find a builder in your area familiar with Sarah's books and concepts on our home professionals directory.

You might also want to read the last two chapters of Creating the Not So Big House, which tell you a lot about what makes a house more or less expensive.

Thanks!

Marie
