Does anyone have any ideas for adding onto a split level? I am having a hard time researching this!!! I would think that this type of house would be the most challenging and that someone out there has done it.

I am eager to hear from you!

Danielle,

There is a split level remodel in Inside the Not So Big House that you might want to check out for some ideas. The chapter is called "The Nature of Materials", and starts on page 142.

Otherwise, you might get something out of The Taunton Press book, Ranches. Here is a link to the book on their site: http://www.taunton.com/store/pages/070555_tcpg.asp.

I hope this helps.

Unfortunately New England is full of these, and I've done several "ranch rescues" in the past couple of years. My first choice is usually to add to the front, giving me the opportunity to alternate the view from the curb. If you contact me through my web site, (artform.biz) I'll email you a couple.

I found a site devoted to splits: ww.splitlevel.net

If you look at their page "additions & subtractions,: they have some basics about what kind of additions look right and which look awful.

I realize that I am bumping an old message as my very first posting, but anyway, I've been trying to research/design the same thing!

Using some consumer-level design software (Punch!), reading all of Sarah's books, and about 100 possibilities later, I came up with the same opinion Wendy Welton (who posted above) ... I like the one where I added onto the front. I lost the original design file (Windows flub, easily re-created, it's the thinking that takes the time!), but not until after I had created a webpage with screen shots and such. http://www.mindcapers.com/remodel/

Opinions and suggestions gratefully accepted! I keep thinking and rethinking, trying to figure out how to get a walk-in closet in the master, but I keep coming back to this plan. Feel free to steal anything, I'm just a "floorplan junkie". Wink
