Can anyone recommend how to make our long, narrow, high-ceilinged apartment seem more cozy? We would like to renovate our New York apartment (built in late 1880s) that is long and narrow (22' x 80') with high ceilings (12'), tall, narrow windows along two adjacent sides of the apartment (3'by 8') and a large area (10'X 12') cut into the middle (along the non-windowed wall) for the common stairwell. The real problem is with the bedrooms which will be about 12'X12'X12' which we're afraid will seem too cavernous. To complicate things, space is a premium in New York and we don't want to lose any storage space. Any advice? Any books/articles to recommend?

Off the cuff, think about using the space 3-dimensionally, if your local codes will allow.
For example, build some steps up to the bedroom, allowing storage below and access to high storage from the bedroom. If rooms can afford to be open to one another, allow them to be for light and a sense of openness.
Tough to offer more without getting into specifics of the existing shell.
