I am currently building a Prairie Style home. Our cabinetry is a dark stained cherry and we are thinking are floors will be dark oak. A few questions I have are: 1. We have Fir Windows and I am wondering if I should use painted casings or use fir casings and stain them to match the window trims. Any suggestions??? 2. Should we be going with a lighter coloured floor if our cabinetry is dark? 3. We are going to have paint grade MDF doors. Should I paint my door jams the same as the door or should I get the jams made out of fir and stain them to match the fir casings? 4. We are thinking of staining our window trims and casings fairly dark to follow suit with our cabinetry. Good or bad idea???
Thanks for the help.

I don't really know enough to answer your questions, but I would suggest considering how much light is in the room when deciding how much dark trim to introduce. Dark colors absorb light, while light surfaces reflect light, and it makes a huge difference. If the room surfaces are mostly dark, you will find yourself using more artificial light, maybe even during the day. As to authenticity -- Arts and Crafts era homes would seem very dark to modern Americans for the most part. You have to decide for yourself how you want your home to look. Personally, I like my public rooms light and the bedrooms dark, but lightable. But that's just me....
