Hi, My husband and I are looking to move from our condo into a house. We desparately want to find a bungalow to purchase. However, the town we are looking to move to has very few bungalows on the market. There is also no land available for sale. So, we are thinking about purchasing another type of house and converting it into a bungalow. We're wondering if anyone could recommend what type of house would be easiest to convert. We were thinking that a Ranch or Cape would be the most likely candidates but would love some advice from others.

I can't offer advice but, I remembered reading an article in our local paper 'The Oregonian' about a couple who remodeled a ranch style house using bungalow detailing. By searching www.oregonlive.com I found the date and headline of the article. Titled "Blind Faith" 'A couple takes gamble on bare box ranch', June 10, 2004. It was in the 'Homes and Gardens of the Northwest' section of 'The Oregonian'. At oregonlive.com you need to purchase the article but, maybe you could access it at your local library. Thought you might be interested in one couples experience in remodeling a ranch to a bungalow. Hope this helpful.
I am really interested in morphing a cape into a bungalow and I think I have a plan that might work. I have the cape. I would really welcome any ideas or thoughts. What I am planning on doing is extending the eaves to be 2feet all around, adding 'bungalow like' shed dormers here and there, and moving the door to the side. I too live in a suburb of Boston woefully devoid of bungalows!
Thoughts? Oh, and I am adding an addition to the right with the same eaves and shed dormers. and a garage in the back with a barn look to it.

Linda - I'm the one about to morph the cape into an arts and crafts style house....and I am in Lexington (moved from Cambridge 10 years ago). I think it is and easy thing to do with ranch. A friend of mine did a really nice job on a ranch. I think I have a good plan for doing it with a cape. I am not sure how to let you get in touch....if you are interested
