I have designed my dream home, and would one day like a professional architectural designer to convert the floor plans I made (all 5000 square feet) into into a more practical, smaller design that does not sacrifice what I want and that meets building code standards. I have actually been hoping that one day Sarah Susanka (or anyone else with her ability to do exactly what I described above) will help me gain exactly what I want -- toss all all the "rules" on conventional home design and do whatever it takes to realistically bring my dream home to life. My design is nothing extremely fancy in terms of shape, there are just a lot of themed rooms I want. I won't need an architectural designer for probably another two years (basically, not until I am financially ready), but I would anyone to who has any advice or suggestions to reply. Also, budget is not an issue yet because I do not know what my budge will be when I begin this project. (I am currently saving money for it.)
If you are the kind who likes to "toss all rules", you should find a copy of "Your Engineered House" by Rex Roberts, and the second edition by Rex Roberts and Charlie Wing. They question the way we do things because many of them are holdovers from a time when we did it for a good reason that is now obsolete. The books are old and probably out of print, but they are fascinating and entertaining reading if you like that kind of really logical thinking. But they are more about construction than design, though there is some of that.
