I work on designing spec houses (houses remodeled on speculation that someone will really like them and pay a lot of money for them). I would like to use the Not-So-Big-House concepts, but it seems to me that you need to have a specific end user in mind in order to cater to their needs. Is there a way to do generic Not-So-Big-Houses?
Great question. It's true that Not So Big houses are specifically tailored to the owners, but that doesn't mean you can't use NSB principles to design a spec house. Whereas usually the family comes first, and you make up a house for them, in this case you'll just need to make up the family as well. Sarah's experience is that if you create a family, along with a story that goes along with them, and build the perfect house for the make-believe family, a real family will come along that fits right into the house.
Sarah found that with the sale of her own house in St.Paul, as well as the sale of previous clients' houses, even though it seems like they were built specifically for a particular person, someone else would always come along and completely fall in love with the house for their own reasons.
