Hi,

I am currently designing an addition for a geodesic dome house. It faces a lake, and I want to use many of Sarah's design principles on the interior. I am having trouble locating ideas/resources for designing a facade that will work with the site. Using the current roof as a guide doesn't work for a dome--I don't want a "baby dome" look.

Any ideas, anyone? I'm stumped.

Hm. Sounds challenging, Roselane.

But, I think you've given us too little information for suggestions.

What is the goal of the addition? What's the scale relative to the original home?

Thanks for the questions to clarify the dome dilemma. I apologize for the delay in my response-I am new to the Board. The dome house is around 1600 square feet (2 stories)--the addition will be around 600 square feet (plus perhaps a second story loft and a garage that would be additional square footage). I see the addition as including an entrance/mudroom, bathroom with sauna, small bedroom or away room, and an open living/dining, potentially with a loft. The living/dining and away room would face the lake, the other rooms would have less view. The site allows for lots of design options--there is plenty of space with few restrictions. I am struggling mostly with what the building footprint should be, and especially with the exterior facade and roofline decisions.

Thanks!

Baby-dome is out, right?

Radial spaces seem to relate well to domes, for what it's worth. Single-story Flat roof might be the simplest if you can keep the addition narrow.

My thoughts go to a "dumb bell" plan, with a slender link between the dome and it's babies.
One baby for the garage, one for the addition?

More that that would require drawings of my own, I'm afraid.

Hi, Thanks for the response, Peter. While baby dome isn't out completely, I don't think that is what I want... I like your idea of radial/dumbbell. The challenge with that is building cost/space efficiency. There might be an adaptation that would incorporate a curved facade on the viewable front (lake side).I have narrowed down to one builder, and will likely have architect involvement on the next design step. You mentioned drawings--I have the original set of house construction drawings, and can share the floorplan if you are interested.
