hey all,

we would like to build a window seat in our 4 year old son's room. the window in question is on the second floor above a first floor bay window. however, it is only 17" deep. "not so big solutions" recommends at least 22". is there a good solution to this problem? or should we just scrap the idea.

thanks in adavance,
skipper

Skipper,

Although Sarah does recommend 22", for a kid, 17" is not bad. You might want to bow the seat out a little bit. That will help give it more depth in some places.

Marie,

thanks for the response. bowing is a good idea. unfortunately the place with the most depth would be in front of the window itself. i am concerned about having a place on which to lean. i have been toying with the idea of using wood to give myself an extra 5 inches w/o a lot of luck. i am searching for some way to frame the space in an interesting way while getting an extra bit of depth.

thanks,
skipper

hey there,

we have another issue. the book mentions a 15 inch high chair with three inch cushions. it also says the window should be 30 inches from the floor. unfortunately ours is 37 inches. should we raise the seat a bit? or is it too narrow to go any higher?

thanks,
skipper

Hi
For what it's worth, having a little more distance between the seat and the window sill is a little safer for small children, and allows you to put pillows on the back wall of the seat. Some states require that the window have tempered glass in a window seat, so be sure to check with the local building inspector.
